Prof. Dr. Md. Anowar Hossain graduated from Dhaka Medical College in 1977. He joined in Laboratory Sciences Division of ICDDR,B in 1980 and was trained overseas in diagnostic microbiology and infectious diseases as the fellow of the Dept of Microbiology and Laboratory Medicine, Free University of Brussels, Belgium in 1985-86.
He was trained in hematopathology from the then IPGMR (BSMMU) in 1990-92 and obtained the Membership (MCPS) in Clinical Pathology from the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS) in 1992. He also obtained the Membership (MCAP) and Fellowship (FCAP) of the College of American Pathologists in 1999 and 2008 respectively.
Dr Anowar worked with ICDDR,B for over 35 years in various capacities and lastly held the position of Senior Scientist and Head of Laboratories Operation Management. While in ICDDR,B Dr Hossain led the operational activities for laboratories and to achieve accreditation for ISO 15189 and 15190 respectively. He was interested in public health, actively involved and conducted research on microbiologic epidemiology, antimicrobial resistance and development of rapid diagnostics for bacteria and viruses. He had around 100 publications in his credit in peer-reviewed international journals and had collaboration with various overseas universities and provided consultation in development of diagnostics to MP Biomedical, Singapore. He was also involved I teaching and training Dept of ICDDR,B and trained the national and international fellows, mentored post graduate students (M Sc, M Phil and PhD) and supervised their thesis. He teaches students of Jahurul Islam Medical College and later in Kumudini Womens Medical College for 15 years as Professor of Microbiology and conducted professional exams as Examiner of Dhaka University.
